Sometimes you just need a break from traditional holiday music. I mean, that 1000th repeat of “Jingle Bells” or “The Christmas Song” can make you lose your enthusiasm faster than getting a lump of coal in your stocking. So in the spirit of extending your holiday cheer (which is the only thing that lets you tolerate Aunt Edna for the entire family holiday party, am I right?), here are the funniest and oddest novelty holiday songs that are sure to brighten your day!

To celebrate today, start by letting go of those things causing unnecessary stress. Start the day by not worrying about being late for work. If you must, take things in your own time, drive casually without rushing through traffic and, if someone cuts you off – just laugh it off and continue on your journey. Today you should let go of the things that normally drive you up the wall – let it slide and be free of the pain and worry – even if it is just for one day.

The truth is, people don’t remember most conversations, so it’s useless having something great to say every time it is your turn to talk. Instead, you have to practice speaking without thinking. This lets you relax and enjoy conversations more because you now just say whatever “feels” right.

National Good and Plenty Day is an unofficial food holiday observed annually on October 24th. On this day, fans of this chewy licorice treat celebrate by indulging in this old-fashioned candy. Good and Plenty, which is now a Hershey's brand candy, was originally produced by Philadelphia candy-maker in 1893. It is said to be the oldest commercial brand of candy in the United States.
Today is National Good and Plenty Day.  This is one of those candies that you either like or don’t.  This licorice treat is the oldest brand of candy in the U.S.A.  Good and Plenty was first made in 1893, by the Quaker City Confectionery Company of Philadelphia. In the 1950s, the brand was given a popularity boost by the Choo Choo Charlie television commercial. Choo Choo Charlie was a train engineer that used Good & Plenty to power his locomotive.

The number of prunes that should be added to the daily diet varies by individual nutritional needs, but it is recommended that a person consume 10 to 12 prunes per day for the best health results. Some people may need to add prunes to their diet slowly, starting with 3 to 5 prunes per day, if they are not accustomed to eating foods high in fiber.

Today is Four Prunes Day. It may sound like a funny name for a food celebration. But four prunes are the minimum of what people who want more “digestive regularity” should take per day (up to a maximum of 9 prunes a day). We love prunes and prune juice. But many Americans steer clear of them, perhaps because of their association with regularity, which goes back to before great-grandmother’s day. A campaign several years back tried to change the name of prunes to “dried plums” (which is what prunes are) to make them more appealing.

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until the 1937. For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage. Throughout its history, Columbus Day and the man who inspired it have generated controversy, and many alternatives to the holiday have appeared in recent years.

The festival began on Carnival Tuesday with the ringing of two bells of the church, and the Middle and the Big. After the Mass, and even coated with church ornaments, don Ramón, accompanied by clergies, teachers and a large number of neighbours, planted the first tree, a poplar, in the place known as Valley of the Ejido.

Surprisingly, the name woodchuck doesn’t have anything to do with wood. It’s thought to be a corruption of the Native American words wejack, woodshaw, or woodchoock. It may have its roots in the Algonquian (or perhaps Narragansett) name for the animal: wuchak.  Other sources claim it’s a bastardization of the Cree word otchek for “fisher” or the Ojibwe ojiig, also for “fisher” or “marten,” which Europeans appropriated and misapplied to the groundhog.  So how much wood could a woodchuck chuck? None, apparently.

I decided to do this as soon as I got into work this morning, because then no one would have to witness my awkward attempts at trying to take a selfie while eating a cracker and holding my keyboard to make sure it was in the picture. Goldfish for breakfast!
Biologically however, our keyboard may be more of a nature preserve for germs than the office toilet. The latter, at least, gets a nightly once-over from the cleaning crew. Your keyboard may never have been cleaned, making it a breeding ground for all sorts of bugs. A study by a University of Arizona biologist found computer keyboards contained more germs per square inch than did toilet seats in the same office; 67 times as many! - See more at: http://www.greenkeyllc.com/blog/do-the-keyboard-shake-to-celebrate-crackers-over-the-keyboard-day/#s

That's not a reason to call out the hazmat unit. Most of the germs are, well, germs that are everywhere and to which we all have some degree of immunity, especially since those on your keyboard come mostly from you. As microbiologist Dr Peter Wilson told the BBC when a study in the U.K. turned up results similar to the Arizona study: "If you look at what grows on computer keyboards, believe it or not, it's more or less a reflection of what's in your nose and in your gut." - See more at: http://www.greenkeyllc.com/blog/do-the-keyboard-shake-to-celebrate-crackers-over-the-keyboard-day/#sthash.8TBUy7P

Colorful processions through the streets and firework displays mark the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption in Italy, as they do in Italian-American communities throughout the United States. In Sicily and rural areas outside Rome, a bowing procession is the day’s main event. A statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the town to a ceremonial arch of flowers, where a group of people holding a statue of Christ awaits her arrival. Both statues are inclined toward each other three times, and then the Christ figure precedes the figure of Mary back to the parish church for a special benediction.

Don't worry about missing the moon at its most full, however. It will appear almost as big the night before and after it hits its peak because it will remain more or less opposite the sun, according to astronomers.

Each year in the U.S. Americans pay tribute to those who have fallen while defending our country on Memorial Day, and the late May holiday also marks the unofficial beginning of summer.  We thank the men and women defending the United States of America and those who gave their lives in wars' past for their sacrifice.

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of summer for most people in the United States. Later that year, the now-familiar box was designed for the Christmas season made with a string to hang from the Christmas tree. Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February, meaning it can occur the 15th through the 21st inclusive, in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. Colloquially, it is widely known as Presidents Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents, not just George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is also in February. The term "Presidents Day" was coined in a deliberate attempt to change the holiday into one honoring multiple presidents

It'll be a cold day in Hell when.. well, when the mercury dips below freezing.
That's exactly what happened in Hell, Mich., the unfortunately-named town located an hour west of Detroit. The few hundred residents saw temperatures, with wind chill, sink below -30 degrees earlier this week. Thursday's midday temperature rose to a balmy 13 degrees, with a wind chill of 2 degrees.

"Somebody," King said, "must have sense enough to meet hate with love. Somebody must have sense enough to meet physical force with soul force. If we will but try this way, we will be able to change these conditions and yet at the same time win the hearts and souls of those who have kept these conditions alive."

Best Radio Show: While in Arizona I not only had time to eat several dozen tacos, I also had a lot of drive time to sample the local radio.  In Tucson I listened to "The Hub" on KXCI hosted by Bob Girth. It's a cornucopia of indie rock from this week, last week, and the last decade. You never know what's on the deck next.
