It was in the late 1800′s that animal shaped cookies were imported to
the United States from England and they very quickly grew in popularity.
In 1902 animal crackers officially became known as “Barnum’s Animals”
and evoked the familiar circus theme of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
Later that year, the now-familiar box was designed for the Christmas
season made with a string to hang from the Christmas tree. At that
time, these boxes of Animal Crackers sold for five cents a box.
