Christmas Eve is the evening before
Christmas. Christmas is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Christ.
Christmas Eve is marked with a lot of excitement and mirth as people
across the globe; eagerly look forward to celebrate this day joyfully.
Children eagerly await the gifts that are due from Santa Claus for that
year while for adults; Christmas is certainly the best time to bond with
family and friends. On Christmas Eve, people usually light bonfires, sing Christmas carols
and hymns together to invoke the blessings of Christ. Christmas Eve is
as fun-filled and exciting as Christmas, the day that each Christian
looks forward to, is hardly some hours away. Eve. Christmas Eve is a
great time to spend some happy moments with your family and have a
memorable time with them.

Christmas
is such a huge holiday that it's nice not to take it too seriously once
in a while. Christmas novelty songs help us do this, if only for a
fleeting moment.
Many
holiday-themed novelty songs have become gigantic hits in their own
right. One such song, "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer," has even
made a whole career for Dr. Elmo, who released it over 30 years ago.
It's the song that just keeps on giving for Elmo Shropshire in the form
of fat royalty checks.
We
all have our favorite novelty holiday songs and for this list I've
included the 10 that popped into my head first. Please let us know what
your favorite holiday novelty song is in the comments and I hope you
include a lot of laughter in your celebrations this year!

Whales live in all four oceans, but different species live in different areas. There are two whale suborders: baleen whales and toothed whales. Baleen whales have a comb-like baleen on their upper jaw; it filters plankton, small fish, and crustaceans. Toothed whales have teeth, and they eat fish and squid, as well as other animals and marine animals. Whales are mammals, meaning they have lungs. Baleen whales have two blowholes, while toothed whales have one. Blowholes are at the top of whale's heads, which allows them to stay submerged while still breathing. Whales can sleep deeper underwater, but they eventually need to come to the surface to breathe. Besides coming up for air, many whales jump out of the water—known as breaching—and also bring their tails above the water and slap the surface.

The Gettysburg Address is celebrated today by various groups in different ways, and the holiday is given a few different names. It is informally named Gettysburg Address Day simply because it marks the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's reading of the Gettysburg Address. It is also known as Equal Opportunity Day. This day was created by the National Urban League in 1956 and continues to be celebrated as such by the league and others, being proclaimed by politicians on multiple occasions. The third name given to the day is Dedication Day, having been formally named as such by a joint resolution of Congress in 1946. It continues to be celebrated as Dedication Day at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

Taking its name from the inspirational book series Chicken Soup for the Soul, this holiday is about reflecting on and celebrating where you've been and where you are headed. According to multiple online sources, the publisher of the book series, Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, has said the day is "...a celebration of who you are, where you've been, where you're going, and who you will be thankful to when you get there!" Some online sources claim that the publisher created the day as well. However, Chicken Soup for the Soul did not do so, and it is unclear how the day got started. In 2014, owner and editor-in-chief Amy Newmark said about the holiday, "We did not create National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day, and we don’t know where it came from." She added that it had already been appearing on calendars at the time she came to the company in 2008. The day can also be used to celebrate Chicken Soup for the Soul books in general.

Big Red Machine, Bob Moses, Villagers, Valley Maker, Boy Pablo
A pretzel is a type of baked bread product made from dough most commonly shaped into a twisted knot. Pretzels originated in Europe, possibly among monastery monks in the Early Middle Ages. The traditional pretzel shape is a distinctive nonsymmetrical form, with the ends of a long strip of dough intertwined and then twisted back into itself in a certain way. In modern times, pretzels come in a range of different shapes. Salt is the most common seasoning for pretzels, complementing the washing soda or lye treatment that gives pretzels their traditional skin and flavor through the Maillard reaction; other seasonings include various cheeses, sugars, chocolate, glazes, seeds, or nuts. There are several varieties of pretzels, including soft pretzels, which must be eaten shortly after preparation, and hard-baked pretzels, which have a long shelf life.

Experts agree that your chair is perhaps the single most important component of a healthy working environment. In fact, it's what most people should adjust first - before modifying their keyboard or monitor position. We've put together some guidelines for achieving optimal chair positioning. You should be able to sit comfortably in the chair, using as much of the chair back as possible for support. The lumbar support should fit comfortably into the curve of your lower back, and your feet should be flat on the ground (use a footrest if necessary). The seat pan (i.e. the part on which you sit) should be an appropriate size that allows at least one inch between your legs and either side of the chair, and supports your legs without applying pressure to the back of your knees.

A group of players (two or more) decide who is going to be "it", often using a counting-out game such as eeny, meeny, miny, moe. The player selected to be "it" then chases the others, attempting to get close enough to "tag" one of them (touching them with a hand) while the others try to escape. A tag makes the tagged player "it". In some variations, the previous "it" is no longer "it" and the game can continue indefinitely, while in others, both players remain "it" and the game ends when all players have become "it".

Less Than Perfect Day is a day to accept that it's okay to not be perfect. Some people are perfectionists that are very hard on themselves if they make a mistake, and some people are okay with their faults. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, today is a day to remember that we all make mistakes and that we should try hard at everything we do, but not so hard as to stress ourselves out. Spend the day trying to keep yourself from stressing out about things you aren't perfect at. It might be a day to challenge yourself to try new and difficult things, because at the same time you will be focusing on not caring if you can't do them with perfection. Try to juggle! Ride a unicycle! Sing a song at the top of your lungs with your car windows down! Try to run for a long distance! If you aren't good at any of them it doesn't matter.

For millennia, people across Europe, as well as Native American tribes, named the months after features they associated with the Northern Hemisphere seasons, and many of these names are very similar or identical.
Today, we use many of these ancient month names as Full Moon names. A common explanation is that Colonial Americans adopted many of the Native American names and incorporated them into the modern calendar.
The Old Farmer's Almanac famously publishes a list of Full Moon names, and we have chosen to use these as the main Full Moon names. However, we have also included several others, and it seems that it is a combination of Native American, Anglo-Saxon, and Germanic month names which gave birth to the Full Moon names we use today.

Tomorrow someone may be gone and it will be too late. Time's up! The time for repairing relationships is today! Time is fleeting. It is uncertain if you or a person you want to make up with will be here tomorrow. Tell yourself that time is up and reach out to the person today. During the Middle Ages, Europeans who could afford it employed seamstresses and tailors. Sewing for the most part was a woman's occupation, and most sewing before the 19th century was practical. Clothing was an expensive investment for most people, and women had an important role in extending the longevity of items of clothing. Sewing was used for mending. Clothing that was faded would be turned inside-out so that it could continue to be worn, and sometimes had to be taken apart and reassembled in order to suit this purpose. Once clothing became worn or torn, it would be taken apart and the reusable cloth sewn together into new items of clothing, made into quilts, or otherwise put to practical use. The many steps involved in making clothing from scratch (weaving, pattern making, cutting, alterations, and so forth) meant that women often bartered their expertise in a particular skill with one another.

By incorporating this S.T.O.P. exercise into your life you can develop better awareness of your particular stress reactions and this awareness, in and of itself, creates distance from these reactions.
In turn, this distance creates the space to better regulate your response to whatever is happening in your life. That is, when you become aware, you can live more consciously and better adapt to your environment and whatever it is you are experiencing in life. What is great about this S.T.O.P. exercise is that it is literally a one-minute exercise, and we can all find one minute. If you are saying to yourself: "No, I don't even have one minute." I invite you to really explore that belief.

First becoming mainstream in the early 1930s, radio dominated American culture from the ’30s through the early’60s, before being eclipsed by television. From New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia reading the Sunday “funnies” (comics) on air, to ground-breaking genre shows including The Shadow, Suspense, Fibber McGee and Molly, Amos and Andy, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, and the like, families across the nation gathered in front of old vacuum-tube radio sets every evening for decades. Radio was the proving ground for modern mass media and comedy, with Edward Murrow reporting from wartime London and Jack Benny and Fred Allen, among others, creating new comedy styles that would soon migrate to the small screen.

Throughout history, left-handed people were considered inferior and were often associated with witchcraft. In Christianity, left is associated with evil, and at the last Judgement, those who are sent to the left are damned. Even a left-handed compliment has a negative connotation, as it is an unflattering compliment.

Progressive rock is a radio station programming format that emerged in the late 1960s, in which disc jockeys are given wide latitude in what they may play, similar to the free-form format but with the proviso that some kind of rock music is almost always played. It enjoyed the height of its popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s. The name for the format began being used circa 1968, when serious disc jockeys were playing "progressive 'music for the head'" and discussing social issues in between records. During the late 1960s, as long playing records began to supplant the single in popularity with rock audiences, progressive rock stations placed more emphasis on album tracks than their AM counterparts.

A whistleblower is a person who exposes any kind of information or activity that is deemed illegal, unethical, or not correct within an organization that is either private or public. The information of alleged wrongdoing can be classified in many ways: violation of company policy/rules, law, regulation, or threat to public interest/national security, as well as fraud, and corruption. Those who become whistleblowers can choose to bring information or allegations to surface either internally or externally. Internally, a whistleblower can bring his/her accusations to the attention of other people within the accused organization such as an immediate supervisor. Externally, a whistleblower can bring allegations to light by contacting a third party outside of an accused organization such as the media, government, law enforcement, or those who are concerned. Whistleblowers, however, take the risk of facing stiff reprisal and retaliation from those who are accused or alleged of wrongdoing.

My, my, sniff that cornscateous air. I suppose it smells like money to farmers and like heavenly food to sweet-corn lovers. But that air is hot, humid and heavy and makes air conditioning my constant companion. “Cornscateous” (pronounced “corn SKAY shuss”) is really a word if you believe the Old Farmer’s Almanac. I tried to look it up in my 1971 dictionary and my 2009 edition, and the word isn’t there. The old almanac makers dreamed it up, I figure, and used it to signify a time in July when the air is damp and warm, which the farmers considered ideal for growing corn. Keep smilin’, folks, it looks good on you.

25 June of each year is the "Day of the Seafarer", recognizing the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families. By generating interaction on the web about seafarers, we want to show respect, recognition and gratitude to seafarers everywhere. The universal outreach of social media will raise awareness of the vital role that seafarers play in the world economy and, in many respects, in sustainable development, enabling ships to carry than 90% of world trade safely, efficiently and with minimal impact on the environment.

Even if you don’t like fishing, you have to admit that sitting quietly on the edge of a lake with a fishing pole and a case of beer beats even the best day at work! Now Go Fish!

John Parish, Father John Misty, Sleepy Zuhoski, Tracyanne & Danny, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
The successful preaching of Christianity at Antioch to non-Jews led the church at Jerusalem to send Barnabas there to oversee the movement (Acts 11:20–22). He found the work so extensive and weighty that he went to Tarsus in search of Paul (still referred to as Saul), "an admirable colleague", to assist him. Paul returned with him to Antioch and labored with him for a whole year (Acts 11:25–26). At the end of this period, the two were sent up to Jerusalem (44 AD) with contributions from the church at Antioch for the relief of the poorer Christians in Judea.

The day can be used to reexamine your goals, find paths to achieve them, and instill in yourself the belief that your goals are attainable. The hope that you can achieve your goal is what will drive you forward. It is a day to reflect on all those who have hoped in the past, and to use their hope to inspire you. Sometimes hope may seem like all you have left, but it can’t be quashed. As Andy Dusfresne said in The Shawshank Redemption, "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."

The Rapture may not have seemed like a joking matter or much of a reason to have a party time for the people who believed it would happen back in 2011, and it’s easy understand why. Imagine believing that 200 million people all over the globe suddenly get sucked up into the sky without a word of warning, amid horrific earthquakes of unprecedented magnitude and relentless plagues–that’s kind of scary, isn’t it? Luckily, the predictions turned out to be completely false. But why let the opportunity to celebrate not having been annihilated go to waste? If the survival of the human race is not an occasion for celebration, what is? So what are you waiting for? Time to throw a Rapture Day Party!

An international day to celebrate the life
and work of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, held each year on 14th May, the
anniversary of the date when Under Milk Wood was first read on stage at 92Y The Poetry Center, New York in 1953.
“International
Dylan Thomas Day gives us a chance each year to celebrate Dylan
Thomas’s achievements. There is still the enthusiasm for a national day
to mark my grandfather’s life and legacy and we want to keep May 14th as
a prominent date on the literary calendar. Dylan Thomas’s writing has travelled through time – it is as relevant
today in our troubled times as when it was written sixty-five years
ago. It continues to travel across the globe reaching new audiences
everyday. His poetry lives on.
We invite you to tell us about how you are going to mark the day and
encourage you, wholeheartedly, to get involved and to love the words."

St George’s Day, when we honour the patron saint of England, should be one of the most celebrated dates in the country's calendar. However most years April 23 goes unnoticed, better known by some as the anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. In Greek mythology, Perseus slew a monster that threatened Andromeda. Not to be outdone, the Crusaders from the 1300s told the story of Saint George. George used his magic sword to kill a dragon ... just in the nick of time to save the king’s daughter from being sacrificed to the fire-breathing beast. As the story goes, this dragon had an insatiable appetite and it was only through his deep faith that George was able to accomplish this deed.

On April 9, 1731, the Spanish coast guard boarded the English brig, the Rebecca, while it was near Havana. It had come from Jamaica with sugar and was on its way to England. While on board, the ear of Captain Robert Jenkins was cut off. Some accounts say that Juan de Leon Fandino, the Spanish captain, tied Jenkins to the mast and tortured him. At some point, someone tried to cut Jenkins' ear off. Apparently, they weren't successful in completely removing it, and a Spanish sailor grabbed it and tore it off. He reportedly gave it to Jenkins, and told him to give it to the king of England, and to tell the king that he would lose his ear as well.

After the war, the soldiers introduced the same concept among homes and the sale of peanut butter and jelly increased tremendously.

For Pete’s Sake Day celebrates one example of a ‘minced oath’, where an offensive word or phrase is substituted by something more acceptable in society. Other examples include ‘For crying out loud!’, and ‘Sugar!’. Such euphemisms have been used for centuries whenever people hit thumbs with hammers, burn hands on hot plates, or sit on sharp things while in polite company. Why has Pete been singled out for special attention? In the case of this particular minced oath, Pete is likely to refer to St Peter. However, if there’s a Pete in your life, why not do something for his sake? It doesn’t have to be much – making him a cup of tea or a nice sandwich would be good! If you are Pete-less, perhaps you can celebrate by saying ‘For Pete’s Sake’ whenever you get an opportunity.

David Byrne, Dick Stusso, Belle & Sebastian, Kid Trails, Dana Buoy, Prism Tats
Conflict is taking a massive toll on people’s lives around the world. Trapped in wars not of their making, millions of civilians are forced to hide or run for their lives. Children are taken out of school, families are displaced from their homes and communities are torn apart, At the same time, health workers and aid workers—who risk their lives to care for people affected by violence—are increasingly being targeted. But the world is not doing enough to end their suffering.

Ivory is the traditional material for the 14th anniversary, but please only ever buy products that are made using imitation ivory which is often made using a composite sourced from non-endangered animal bones, tagua nuts, or some other non-animal source. Please never purchase real ivory because that supports an illegal and brutal elephant poaching industry.

Portugal. The Man, St. Vincent , Wolf Parade, Destroyer, Mogwai
Most media outlets love to treat a "supermoon" as some sort of special or unusual occurrence. Upon hearing that a specifically selected moon comes with the prefix "super" attached, people rush outside to get a look and come away thinking that they have just witnessed something akin to a rare cosmic alignment. Such feelings put a new spin on the whimsical tale penned in 1837 by Hans Christian Andersen, "The Emperor’s New Clothes."
