The period from late November until early January is lumped together as “the holiday season.” You’ve got your biggies like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s, plus dates that get not quite so much attention, like Kwanzaa, the Winter Solstice, Boxing Day, and Festivus. With that many holidays crammed into a few weeks, it makes sense to go for the general holiday wish. In a time of year that’s already hectic, wondering what to wish people can be yet another stress. But don’t forget that even with all the errands, tasks, and projects that need to be finished up by the end of the year, this is also a season that’s supposed to be happy or merry. You’re wishing someone a positive time of year. What matters most is the sentiment, not the specific holiday they celebrate.

Laurel Canyon found itself a nexus of counterculture activity and attitudes in the mid-late 1960s and early 1970s, becoming famous as home to many of L.A.'s rock musicians, such as Frank Zappa; Jim Morrison of The Doors; Carole King; The Byrds; Buffalo Springfield; Canned Heat; John Mayall; members of the band The Eagles; the band Love; Neil Young; Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and Micky Dolenz & Peter Tork of The Monkees. Tork's home was considered one of Laurel Canyon's biggest party houses with all-night, drug-fueled sleepovers, well attended by the hippest musicians and movie stars of the era.

In the nineteenth century, most people made popcorn by holding long-handled wire boxes filled with kernels over fires. This was effective for home consumption, but something else was needed to make popcorn commercially. The problem was solved by Charles Cretors, who built the first commercial popcorn machine. He founded C. Cretors & Company on today's date in 1885, and his machines soon made it practical for people to get into the business of popping corn. He powered his popcorn machine with a steam engine, which allowed it to be automated. A fire under a broiler created the steam that powered its small engine, and the engine moved gears, a shaft, and an agitator which stirred the corn kernels. There was a storage bin where fresh popcorn could be dumped, which was kept heated by steam exhaust. Some steam was also diverted to a whistle that was used to attract customers.

Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor all American veterans of war. On November 11, 1918, a cessation of hostilities, or armistice, between the Allied Powers and Germany took place. With this armistice, fighting during World War I ended, and the stage was set for a treaty to be signed formally ending the war. On June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed. On the first anniversary of the armistice, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day as Armistice Day, and said, "To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations." At this time celebrations were marked with parades and public meetings, as well as brief pauses in business at 11:00 AM, the time at which the armistice had taken place in 1918.

You've been told again and again to not eat too much candy. However, today you can give in to your sweet tooth and eat as much as you want. Why? Because it's National Candy Day! Candy, confections which come in the form of bars, morsels, lozenges, and other figures, are usually eaten as a snack or treat and not during mealtime. They are made with sugar, syrup, or other sweet ingredients, and often contain chocolate, fruit, or nuts. Flour, eggs, milk, and natural and artificial flavorings are also commonly used to make candy. There are a wide variety of types of candy. Chocolate is often referred to as candy on its own, and it is the most popular type, often being combined with other ingredients such as fruits and nuts. It is often used to make candy bars. Other common types of candy include hard candy, jelly beans, mints, taffy, caramels, lollipops, licorice, marshmallows, gummy candies, and sour candies.

Today is for babbling and for celebrating babblers. While a babbler is a term that can be ascribed to someone who seems to talk nonstop about nothing, it can also apply to a baby making noise who is in the process of learning how to talk. Another name for a babbler is a blatherskite. We could try to describe this holiday in more depth, but then we would just be babbling, because there really isn't much more to say. But to go on would be fitting, though, wouldn't it? We just love babbling about holidays anyway. Celebrate the day by babbling to yourself or by babbling to others, either by talking continuously about nothing or by babbling like a baby, in incoherent sounds. You could even babble along with a baby. Tell any notorious blatherskites who you know that it is Babbling Day.

National FRUMP Day is a day to be a frugal, responsible, unpretentious, and mature person. It is also a day to honor those who exemplify these characteristics in their lives. To be frugal is to be prudent, thrifty, or economical in use of things, resources, or money. To be responsible is to be reliable and accountable, and to have the capacity to make moral decisions and to carry out obligations. To be unpretentious is to be modest, while not being showy or ostentatious. Finally, to be mature is to be developed in the mind in such a way as to make sound judgments like someone who has experience. When you are frugal you will be able to focus on the things that really matter in life. When you are responsible you won't have to worry as much. When you are unpretentious you will be able to listen more to others and get their perspective. When you are more mature you will better be able to make decisions that impact you and those around you.

You've probably heard the phrase, "There is no such thing as a stupid question." It is said in order to encourage people to ask questions they have been reluctant to ask because they themselves perceive them to be stupid. Chances are, if the questions are asked, they do end up sounding pretty stupid. People often laugh at those who ask the questions, and the inquirer feels embarrassed. Well, the embarrassment melts away today, and the questions are asked freely because it is Ask a Stupid Question Day. Celebrate the day by asking as many stupid questions as you want, without worrying if people are judging you. Although the day is most celebrated in the classroom, it doesn't exclusively have to be celebrated there, and you can ask your stupid question or questions anywhere you'd like. If after asking your questions people think they are stupid, just tell them that it is Ask a Stupid Question Day and it was more appropriate to ask the question than to not ask it.

Seattle is known for having Pike Place Market, the oldest continually operated farmers market in the country. The price of produce, especially onions, rose dramatically between 1906 and 1907, so the city created the market so that produce could be bought directly from farmers; it opened in August 1907. The Space Needle was built for the 1962 World's Fair. Standing 605 feet tall, its foundation goes 30 feet under the ground, which would help it withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour and earthquakes of up to 9.1 in magnitude. Seattle is also known for being the home of Starbucks, for its many houseboats, for the prevalence of pinball, for being the birthplace of grunge music, and for its Museum of History and Industry.

Whether you self-identify as a weirdo, or have family or friends that proclaim themselves to be weirdos, there is plenty of weirdness to celebrate! If you think of yourself as a weirdo, this is a day to celebrate how wonderful you are. If you see people you know who are weirdos, the creators of the day say today is "the day to thank them. So give them a hug, and say 'I love you, you weirdo!'" There are a lot of "weird" things you could do to celebrate.

There was an economic downturn in 1893, and by 1894 there was a depression where up to 18% of the country's population was out of work. Wages were slashed at the Pullman Palace Car Company in Illinois, and workers went on strike. The American Railway Union (ARU), led by Eugene Debs, joined the cause, and workers of the ARU refused to handle Pullman railcars. Eventually, President Grover Cleveland sent in federal troops, and the state militia also arrived. The strike was crushed and some died. It was at this time that Labor Day was pushed through as a federal holiday, in order to placate labor after this bitter strike. By this time, thirty states already officially observed the holiday. Traditionally, Labor Day consists of parades, followed by gatherings of workers with their families and friends. Labor Day also marks the unofficial end of summer, and it is around this time that students go back to school, and fall sports begin.

Thomas Jefferson once said, "I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it." On Make Your Own Luck Day do just that by being open to new experiences and opportunities. Don't be stuck in a routine. Set a goal and work hard for it. Don't accept defeat and take risks. Richard Wiseman, head of a psychology research department at the University of Hertfordshire in England, says he's cracked the code "Luck isn't due to kismet, karma, or coincidence, he says. Instead, lucky folks — without even knowing it — think and behave in ways that create good fortune in their lives".

This week, after all, marks the 50th anniversary -- 50th anniversary! -- of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, the rain-soaked, mud-splattered three-day rock concert on a farm in upstate New York that many mark as the climactic act of the Boom years. Which raises a question: when you've so long been defined by youth, what do you become when youth is gone? What drew the Woodstock generation together was ultimately not anger, but a hope -- idealistic, naive and impossibly young -- that yet tugs at the imagination, the hope of a better, fairer, cleaner, saner, more peaceful world. As Woodstock veteran Graham Nash recently told CBS News, "I still believe what we believed then ... that love is better than hatred, that peace is much better than war, that we have to take care of our fellow human beings, because this is all we have."
Somewhere along the way, Nash, like many of us, got old. But that hope never did.

Wild tigers are only found in Asia. The larger subspecies of them, such as the Siberian tiger, usually live in more northern, colder areas such as eastern Russia and northeastern China, while the smaller subspecies live in warmer, southern countries, such as India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. Tigers live in forests, which vary depending on the subspecies and the part of the world they are in. Arid, flooded mangrove, tropical, and taiga are all forests that are inhabited by tigers. Tigers are solitary creatures that roam large areas for food. A Siberian tiger may have a range of 4,000 square miles. Tigers usually are orange with black stripes but can be other colors as well, such as white with tan stripes. The markings are different on every tiger, just like fingerprints on a human. Being carnivores, their stripes help camouflage them when hunting large animals such as deer, rhinos, elephant calves, and pigs. The tigers suffocate their prey with their large jaws, after clamping down on their neck.

Blue Monday is a name given to a day in January claimed to be the most depressing day of the year. The concept was first publicized as part of a 2005 press release from holiday company Sky Travel, which claimed to have calculated the date using an equation. It takes into account weather conditions and this only applies to the Northern Hemisphere. Per complete coincidence the date in the United States almost always coincides with the celebration of Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday, and so the concept of Blue Monday is not widely known there.

Canada Day celebrates the country's movement to self-government. On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing Dominion of Great Britain, after the passage of the British North America Act. It also became a federation with four provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. These provinces were made from the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada (previously Upper Canada and Lower Canada). The Act allowed for other provinces and territories to join the country in the future. On June 20, 1868, the Governor General said the anniversary of Canada becoming a Dominion should be celebrated. It became a statutory holiday in 1879 and was known as Dominion Day at the time. The first official celebrations weren't held until 1917, on the Dominion's fiftieth anniversary. It began being celebrated more frequently after World War II, and even more so after the 100th anniversary in 1967. It began being called Canada Day by celebrants and has been officially known as Canada Day since 1983. This was stipulated by the Canada Act of 1982. Canada also became a fully independent country with this act, no longer being under the dominion of Great Britain.

Unfortunately, despite it having a delicious-sounding name, it does not necessarily mean the moon will be turning strawberry red. It is actually just the name given to June’s full moon by Native Americans. Native Americans published the names for all the full moons in the 1930s Maine Farmer’s Almanac. The reason June’s full moon was named after the fruit was because of the relatively short harvesting season for strawberries in northeastern North America. June’s full moon is also known as the last full moon of spring. In Europe it is also known as the Mead Moon, Honey Moon or Rose Moon. June’s full moon is named due to harvesting reasons. But there are also those who believe the Strawberry Moon signals the end of the world. Pastor Tim Henderson believes the Strawberry Moon will spark the end of days – or The Rapture. The Rapture is an event where many Christians believe the son of God will return. It is believed when this happens believers who are “alive and remain shall be caught up together… in the clouds to see the Lord in the air”. The Rapture ill happen in “the twinkling of an eye”, and all believers will disappear from Earth up to Heaven.

Jupiter has generally been associated with good luck and bounty. Optimism and growth (including mental and spiritual growth) come under its rule. On the up side, Jupiter is associated with a sense of humor, good will, and mercy. The more negative manifestations of Jupiter include blind optimism, excess, and overindulgence. Irresponsibility that results from blind optimism, not ill will, can be displayed. Jupiter’s glyph, or symbol, shows the crescent of receptivity rising above the cross of matter. This symbolize Jupiter’s role of raising our awareness beyond the physical world. Jupiter encourages us to reach, expand, and improve. Jupiter takes approximately 12 years to come full circle. Therefore, every 3 years or so, Jupiter will transit conjunct, square, or opposite a natal point. When that natal point is an intensely personal planet or point (such as the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Venus, or Mars), we feel its effects in a similarly personal way.

Chimborazo Day celebrates the spot on the Earth that is closest to the moon and farthest from the center of the Earth. Chimborazo is an inactive volcano that is in the Cordillera Occidental range of the Andes Mountains in central Ecuador, and has an elevation of 20,565 feet. Although Chimborazo has a lower elevation than Mt. Everest, because of its spot near the Equator it is the farthest from the Earth’s center and closest to the moon. The Earth is not a perfect sphere, but rather it is an oblate spheroid. The Equatorial diameter is larger than the Polar diameter, and Chimborazo lies close to the former. Being that it lies on this Equatorial bulge, it sticks about a mile and a half farther into space than Mt. Everest. For eighty years during the 19th century men and women tried to reach the peak of Chimborazo before succeeding. To celebrate Chimborazo Day you may want to get as far away from center of the Earth as possible. Climb a hill! Climb a tower! Climb a mountain! You will be just a little bit closer to the place in space that Chimborazo holds.

Fear is a survival response, but sometimes it becomes overwhelming and may control our lives. In this circumstance, it may cause us to become overly cautious, or make us react in harmful ways. Nothing to Fear Day is a day when people examine their fears and see if the fears are preventing them from living life to the fullest. It may be a day to work to overcome these fears. It is also a day to be aware of the way that people and governments use baseless fears to manipulate people, either inadvertently or on purpose. May 27 was chosen as the date of Nothing to Fear Day because it was on this date in 1941 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech where he said: "We must not be defeated by the fear of the very danger which we are preparing to resist. Our freedom has shown its ability to survive war, but our freedom would never survive surrender. 'The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.'"

The earliest known apple pie recipe was printed by Geoffrey Chaucer in England in 1381. It included apples, spices, raisins, figs, pears, and saffron in a pastry crust. A Dutch apple pie recipe was found that dates to 1514. Dutch apple pies usually have a lattice pastry top. French, German, and Italian apple pies all appeared in recipe books before American colonies had been settled. Many early apple pie recipes didn't include sugar, and some early pies were made in inedible containers called coffins. Today, apple pie usually has a bottom and top crust. It can be served hot or cold and can be topped with ice cream, custard, and whipped cream. The earliest record of the phrase "American as apple pie" dates to 1924, when it appeared in an advertisement in the Gettysburg Times. The association between apple pie and America became inextricable by World War II when American soldiers would tell journalists they were fighting for "mom and apple pie." This eventually led to the phrase "As American as mom and apple pie." It became a prevalent saying in the United States during the Postwar years.

The most popular tale regarding this saint is the one in which he slays a dragon. Thus, St. George is most commonly depicted as a knight mounted on a horse and in the process of spearing a dragon. This image has inspired many artists over the years, and has been portrayed on various coats of arms.

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. Prior to this, there was virtually no environmental movement. Factories pumped toxins into the air, recycling was almost non-existent, and gas guzzling vehicles were the norm. The seeds of the modern movement had been planted, however, with the publishing of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1962. This book raised the public's awareness of pollution and its effect on health. In 1969, water pollution and chemical waste disposal came to the attention of the public, after the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland caught fire. Twenty million people participated during the first year. Rallies for the environment were held in most major American cities, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and New York City. Take a Wild Guess day. There's no prize for guessing what we're celebrating today. As your intuition may have told you, we salute the fine art of blurting out the first postulation that comes to mind. The aim is to turn the spotlight on hunches, brilliant leaps of deduction and outright guesswork. Creator of the day Jim Barber made a lucky guess that it would be a popular thing to fete on exactly the same day that we file our taxes. What a refreshing change from adding up rows of figures. Just give your imagination free rein and take a shot in the dark.
