The Rapture may not have seemed like a joking matter or much of a reason
to have a party time for the people who believed it would happen back
in 2011, and it’s easy understand why. Imagine believing that 200
million people all over the globe suddenly get sucked up into the sky
without a word of warning, amid horrific earthquakes of unprecedented
magnitude and relentless plagues–that’s kind of scary, isn’t it?
Luckily, the predictions turned out to be completely false. But why let
the opportunity to celebrate not having been annihilated go to waste? If
the survival of the human race is not an occasion for celebration, what
is? So what are you waiting for? Time to throw a Rapture Day Party!

An international day to celebrate the life
and work of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, held each year on 14th May, the
anniversary of the date when Under Milk Wood was first read on stage at 92Y The Poetry Center, New York in 1953.
“International
Dylan Thomas Day gives us a chance each year to celebrate Dylan
Thomas’s achievements. There is still the enthusiasm for a national day
to mark my grandfather’s life and legacy and we want to keep May 14th as
a prominent date on the literary calendar. Dylan Thomas’s writing has travelled through time – it is as relevant
today in our troubled times as when it was written sixty-five years
ago. It continues to travel across the globe reaching new audiences
everyday. His poetry lives on.
We invite you to tell us about how you are going to mark the day and
encourage you, wholeheartedly, to get involved and to love the words."

St George’s Day, when we honour the patron saint of England, should be one of the most celebrated dates in the country's calendar. However most years April 23 goes unnoticed, better known by some as the anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. In Greek mythology, Perseus slew a monster that threatened Andromeda. Not to be outdone, the Crusaders from the 1300s told the story of Saint George. George used his magic sword to kill a dragon ... just in the nick of time to save the king’s daughter from being sacrificed to the fire-breathing beast. As the story goes, this dragon had an insatiable appetite and it was only through his deep faith that George was able to accomplish this deed.

On April 9, 1731, the Spanish coast guard boarded the English brig, the Rebecca, while it was near Havana. It had come from Jamaica with sugar and was on its way to England. While on board, the ear of Captain Robert Jenkins was cut off. Some accounts say that Juan de Leon Fandino, the Spanish captain, tied Jenkins to the mast and tortured him. At some point, someone tried to cut Jenkins' ear off. Apparently, they weren't successful in completely removing it, and a Spanish sailor grabbed it and tore it off. He reportedly gave it to Jenkins, and told him to give it to the king of England, and to tell the king that he would lose his ear as well.
