In the 1950s and 1960s, the peak of such artistic movements as the Theater of the Absurd and Surrealism gave rise to an entire genre of literature based on non sequitur behaviors and otherworldly plots. One of the works from this time, “Waiting for Godot”, is based entirely around a pair of characters waiting at a tree for their friend, Godot whom we never meet to arrive. Absurdism can be difficult to define since it is by its very nature anti-establishment and anti-order. Embracing absurdity simply requires us to move directly past all the tacit rules that we tend to accommodate each day, from the way we dress to the way we speak, to how we sit in a public place.

Psalm 90:10 reads: "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength, labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away." At his 70th birthday celebration, Mark Twain summed up the significance of the occasion saying: "The seventieth birthday. It is the time of life when you arrive at a new and awful dignity; when you may throw aside the decent reserves which have oppressed you for a generation and stand unafraid and unabashed upon your seven-terraced summit and look down and teach--unrebuked."

It is a very useful idiom to express a wide variety of situations. It is used to express relief that something has happened at all, after the optimum time; it can be used ironically, suggesting that the speaker is actually quite irritated with whatever or whoever it is that is late, and is thus a pointed comment on the lateness. If it’s used with a sarcastic tone, it could be insulting or rude, and is often used in professional situations such as someone being late for a meeting, in which case it could be particularly hurtful.

Phone in Sick Day is celebrated on May 1 every year. It is a day set aside to appreciate the average working-class citizen and give him a day of rest. Phone in Sick Day is celebrated as casually as it sounds, but the motivations are more nuanced. People call in sick on this day to protest against longer work hours, less free time, a decreased quality of life, and to voice their displeasure with the “rat race” of modern living. Since they hold some of the lowest-paying occupations, the working class doesn’t have much power individually; thus, the day is specially designed to provide them a chance to unite and demonstrate their economic strength.
