Old New Year's Day—the day that was seen as being the start of the new year—was observed on March 25 by many countries up until the creation of the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Even after this, some countries still observed the new year on March 25. This had begun in some places after Dionysius Exiguus introduced the Anno Domini calendar in 525 CE. Dionysius assigned March 25 as the new year because Jesus was to be conceived on the Annunciation, nine months before Christmas Day. The new year also was placed at this time because it was near the spring equinox.

Awkward moments are those that cause embarrassment, and they pretty much happen every day. Maybe we forget what someone's name is after not seeing them for awhile. Maybe someone says something crazy at a large group meeting and no one knows how to respond. Maybe some awkward things were said after having a few too many Irish beers yesterday. Awkwardness abounds everywhere. Whatever the case, today is a day to embrace all the awkward moments that arise in life, and to just let them happen. By viewing them in this way, the awkwardness might even begin to dissipate as well. On this day people also share their awkward moments with others, which are sure to be a laugh.

In addition to Ash Monday, Clean Monday is known by other names among different groups of Eastern Christians. Pure Monday is the most common name; among Greek Catholics and Orthodox, Clean Monday is referred to by its Greek name, Kathari Deftera (just as Mardi Gras is simply French for "Fat Tuesday"). Among Eastern Christian on Cyprus, Clean Monday is called Green Monday, a reflection of the fact that Clean Monday has traditionally been regarded by Greek Christians as the first day of spring.

A random act of kindness can make a much stronger impact than you might think. Your choice to hold a door open for a stranger or return a missing wallet may be the one positive thing to happen to the recipient that day. For all we know, that person may have been feeling lonelier than ever, or losing faith in the goodness of the world. A small positive act on your part may change that person’s worldview, and that’s pretty powerful. Research has repeatedly found that helping others helps you, too. Giving back to your community or doing a good deed lights up your brain’s pleasure center and can prompt a rush of feel-good chemicals. Scientists aren’t sure why kindness feels so good, but it’s been theorized that the need to help others is something prehistoric humans developed to ensure the survival of their social group.
